Sizing Guidelines and Considerations (not meant to be a definitive guide, pets are unique and do vary)
1. STYLE: How does your pet like to sleep?
* STRETCHED OUT? Mattress type pet beds made of foam or poly fill. You
can buy memory foam or regular orthopedic foam. Memory foam dog
beds are a better choice for older pets.
- Poly Fill pet beds are stuffed much like a traditional cotton-filled pillow.
Often this filling will include "cedar bits" which will help maintain a fresh
smell and have the added benefit of repelling fleas and other insects
naturally. We carry a large number of these types of pet beds manufactured by O’Donnell Industries. See all of their pet beds here: Snoozer products. The best pet beds will also have a zippered liner so that the
filling can be replaced and the outside cover washed. These types of pet beds
provide an excellent balance between comfort and support. If your pet often
circles when they are getting ready to sleep, you'll want to make sure the pet
bed you choose for them will not flatten out quickly - spring wound cotton
poly-fill stuffing works great.
- Solid Foam Dog Beds are comfortable for all pets, but are especially
recommended for LARGE BREEDS and OLDER CANINES, which often develop calluses
over their elbows and hocks. These problems can be helped with a good quality
foam dog bed, see our choices here: orthopedic
dog beds.
* CURLED? Round and Bolster dog beds are the best choice. See our selection here: Bolster Dog
pillow beds.
* SNUGGLED-IN or COVERED? We have unique dog beds that
work great for the pet that likes to be covered or snuggled in when they sleep. See our selection here: Cozy and Hooded Dog
Beds.
* IN A SAFE SPOT? Dogs instinctually crave a secure and consistent spot to rest. So if you often find your dog sleeping under a table or in an isolated spot, they may be seeking a Den. Because of this instinctual need, a Den-like space can provide great benefit to anxious or active dogs, or even just busy households – giving the dog a place they know they can “turn off.” The Town Haus and the Zen Haus act as beautiful furniture, a secure crate, and a comfy Den, making it easy to satisfy your dog’s instincts!
2. SIZE: How big is your pet? (see examples below)
* MEASURE YOUR PET, from nose to rump as they are lying down, then add
5 inches if they like to sleep stretched out. Pick the next biggest size pet bed for that measurement (not the
next smallest). For round pet beds use the diameter.
* WEIGHT, how much does your pet weigh? Often manufacturers will
list a weight in the specifications. Use this as a general guideline only and
in conjunction with measuring your pet as described above.

Use the above chart as a guide. The size of a
breed of dog can vary so we encourage you to measure your pet to determine
their individual size and always add extra inches so your pet has plenty of room. We offer products by many different manufacturers and all have different designs, styles, shapes, and sizes so every product page clearly lists the sizes for that model. Please double check the product sizes on the product pages prior to submitting your order. If you need assistance please feel free to call or email us prior to ordering. Go to our Contact Us page for contact information.
3. CONSTRUCTION: How and what materials are used to make the pet bed?
The type of filling, foam or poly fill, will determine the comfort and support
levels of the pet bed. See above (#1) for a discussion of these two types of
filling.
The quality of the materials used for the cover, and how the cover is
joined, will determine durability. Waterproof fabric, washable fabrics may be
important features to consider. Is cording on the seams, serged seams or
double stitching used to prevent fraying. Read the description to find out!
